In The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy the main characters have one choice – leave earth. Still, few seconds before earth will be demolished in order to make way for a hyperspace bypass, they stopped in a bar for last drink. I decided to use this reference since I find it depicts this time very accurate. There is one main difference and that is – we aren’t going anywhere, baby!
„Just when you think life can’t possibly get any worse it suddenly does …“*
The tendency of this government is quite clear and unfortunately rather consistent. As far as legally possible any social activities which support and promote a collaborative and equal society shall be minimized. We are developing into a society where fair distribution, free movement, and free speech seem as absurd ideas.
“This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move …”*
All over Austria, people are gathering and taking over the racist discourse with actions, weekly demonstrations and clear demands for housing and rent control, equal pay or rethinking distribution of the public space. Among many other demands there is a clear statement – we are angry and we are taking over! Join those groups, get active, sing, draw, write about them. Make alliances (Interessengemeinschaften) independent and stronger – become a member, carry a towel and see you on “Do”! #wiederdonnerstag
I would like to take this opportunity as well to invite you to IGs happy hours in the IG Bildende Kunst in order to introduce myself (as new chairwoman) and to share with you our goals and activities we planned for the next years. We are looking forward to meet you, members and future members, for a drink or two before the new bypass lands on us.
And don’t forget: IGs happy hours @ Friday 25. 1. 2019 from 16:00 – come as you are and be prepared to be surprised.
Sheri Avraham ist Vorsitzende der IG Bildende Kunst.
