Die Interessenvertretung IG Bildende Kunst ruft alle Künstler:innen zur Protestaktion vor dem KHM auf. Mit einer Performance und Kundgebung verschaffen wir unserem Anliegen nach freiem Eintritt für bildende Künstler:innen Gehör.
Ablauf der Kundgebung
- Ankommen
- Das “Band der Solidarität” entsteht, geknüpft aus Hemden. Als Linie läuft es auf das KHM zu und steht für die gesellschaftliche Wertschätzung unsichtbarer künstlerischer Arbeit, die beginnt lange bevor das einzelne Werk ins Museum kommt.
- Alle Teilnehmenden nehmen es auf, es entsteht ein Netz in Bewegung.
- Wir laden ein, kurze Statements (eigene und/oder von uns vorbereitete) aus der Bewegung heraus in ein fixes Mikrofon zu sprechen.
- Anschließend: Open Mic, Einladung zu Kurzreden. Beiträge sind willkommen, denn die Untergrabung der IAA-Karte ist nur eines von vielen Symptomen, die Künstler*innen in der aktuellen ökonomischen Krise zu spüren bekommen.
Seit 2022 erkennt das KHM – im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Ausstellungshäusern in Wien, in Österreich und weltweit – den IAA-Ausweis (internationaler Künstler:innenausweis der International Association of Art, https://aiap-iaa.art/) ohne nachvollziehbare Begründung nicht mehr an. Mit der Protestaktion vor dem KHM schließen wir an zahlreiche Bemühungen seit 2022 an.
Künstler:innen sind keine Freizeitgäste in Ausstellungen, sondern Produzent:innen von musealer Zukunft. Der IAA-Ausweis ist ein anerkanntes Berufsdokument. Er wird herausgegeben von der International Association of Art, in Österreich ausgestellt von der IG Bildende Kunst.
Der Wegfall des freien Eintritts für bildende Künstler:innen hat keine nennenswerte Budgetentlastung für das Kunsthistorische Museum gebracht, aber einen großen symbolischen Schaden für Künstler:innen verursacht. Für viele Künstler:innen sind Eintrittspreise eine erhebliche Hürde, die Anerkennung des IAA-Ausweises ist ein Akt der Wertschätzung. Als wissenschaftliche Institution hat das KHM einen Bildungs- und Förderauftrag. Museen sind nicht nur für das Bewahren von Kunst wichtig, sondern auch für die Förderung zeitgenössischer Kunstproduktion!
Fazit:
Die Wiedereinführung des freien Eintritts für Künstler:innen mit IAA-Ausweis ist:
- kulturell notwendig (Anerkennung und Förderung kreativer Berufe),
- wirtschaftlich tragbar (kein messbarer Einnahmeverlust),
- orientiert an international anerkannten Praxisstandards
- institutionell sinnvoll (Stärkung der Funktion des Museums als Ort professionellen Austauschs)
Die Frage lautet nicht, ob sich das KHM den freien Eintritt für Künstler:innen leisten kann.
Sondern: Kann das KHM es sich leisten, darauf zu verzichten?

kunstSTOFF: Alerta artista! Politisch aktiv sein
Am Dienstag, 3.3. um 17 Uhr werden wir die Aktion im Rahmen des kunstSTOFFs gemeinsam vorbereiten. Im kunstSTOFF bündeln wir Ideen, Materialien und Strategien für eine wirkungsvolle und kreative Kundgebung. Ob Konzeption, Gestaltung oder Organisation – jede Perspektive stärkt unseren gemeinsamen Auftritt.

The artists’ advocacy organization IG Bildende Kunst calls on all artists to join a protest action in front of the KHM. Through a performance and a rally, we will make our demand for free admission for visual artists heard.
Program of the rally
- Arrival
- The “Ribbon of Solidarity” is created, tied together from shirts. As a line, it moves toward the KHM and represents the social appreciation of invisible artistic work that begins long before an individual artwork enters a museum.
- All participants take hold of it, forming a moving network.
- We invite participants to speak short statements (their own and/or ones prepared by us) from within the movement into a fixed microphone.
- Afterwards: Open mic, invitation for short speeches. Contributions are welcome, because the undermining of the IAA card is only one of many symptoms that artists are experiencing in the current economic crisis.
Since 2022, the KHM—in contrast to many other exhibition institutions in Vienna, in Austria, and worldwide—has no longer recognized the IAA card (the international artists’ ID of the International Association of Art, https://aiap-iaa.art/) without providing a comprehensible explanation. With the protest action in front of the KHM, we continue numerous efforts that have been underway since 2022.
Artists are not leisure visitors to exhibitions, but producers of the museum’s future. The IAA card is a recognized professional document. It is issued by the International Association of Art and in Austria distributed by IG Bildende Kunst.
The abolition of free admission for visual artists has not brought any significant budget relief to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, but it has caused major symbolic harm to artists. For many artists, entrance fees are a considerable barrier, and recognition of the IAA card is an act of appreciation. As a scientific institution, the KHM has a mandate for education and support. Museums are not only important for preserving art, but also for supporting contemporary artistic production.
Conclusion
The reintroduction of free admission for artists with an IAA card is:
culturally necessary (recognition and support of creative professions),
economically viable (no measurable loss of revenue),
aligned with internationally recognized standards of practice,
institutionally meaningful (strengthening the museum’s role as a place of professional exchange).
The question is not whether the KHM can afford free admission for artists.
The question is: Can the KHM afford not to?
